National Outdoors Leadership School Visits Beacon

Unique educational experience offers a path to leadership skills

A representative from the National Outdoors Leadership School (NOLS) was at Beacon High School last week to offer students and their families a glimpse at a unique educational experience. The presentation provided an overview of their program, including remote wilderness expeditions in “some of the world’s wildest and most awe-inspiring classrooms.”

NOLS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that teaches technical outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental ethics to people of all ages. Students at Beacon were encouraged to consider the program as a way to earn college credit or make the most of a gap year experience.

As described in their mission statement, the NOLS program emphasizes a “hands on, learn-by-doing approach” and seeks to develop the skills students will need to be “competent, responsible wilderness travelers long after the course is over.”
